Streptomycin exhibits antibacterial and anti-parasitic activities, binding 16S rRNA of the 30S bacterial ribosome and inhibiting formyl-methionyl-tRNA binding; this prevents the formation of the initiation complex. Streptomycin was originally used to treat tuberculosis, but has since been used in veterinary medicine to treat gram negative bacterial infection.
